COLUMBIA — Students at Paxton Keeley Elementary School will be welcomed by a new principal at the beginning of the next school year.

Adrienne Patton was named interim principal after Elaine Hassemer, who has served as Paxton Keeley principal since 2001, announced her resignation early Tuesday.

“My decision to leave Paxton Keeley was difficult, but I also believe it is the right thing for my family and me, both personally,” Hassemer said in a news release.

Patton, the current assistant principal at Derby Ridge Elementary School, will meet with Hassemer to discuss future plans for the school.

“I’m going to meet with Elaine and see what she has going on from there,” Patton said.

Patton said she is excited to become a part of the community and work with the teachers and students. She has 14 years of experience in education, working as a teacher, assistant principal and summer school principal.

Hassemer is taking a job as the principal of Our Lady of Lourdes Interparish School.

"A sign of a great school is its ability to continue successfully even when someone leaves. I will always be proud to say I worked at Paxton Keeley Elementary,” Hassemer said.
