Frances S. Allen, dietitian at MU, died Sunday at age 87

COLUMBIA — Frances S. Allen of Shawnee, Kan., formerly of Columbia, died Sunday, June 16, 2013, in Shawnee. She was 87.

Mrs. Allen was born Jan. 9, 1926, to Charles and Minnie May Worstell in Bixby, Okla. She married her husband Harold Laton Allen on Sept. 6, 1947, in Rolla.

Mrs. Allen worked as a dietitian at MU for 35 years, said her granddaughter Suzanne Congrove. Mrs. Allen was dedicated to her family and her faith.

"She was devoted to helping people," Congrove said.

Mrs. Allen enjoyed baking and sowing and was avid about her yard and flowers, Congrove said.

"I know it sounds cliched, but she really was a saint," Congrove said.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her daughter, Connie Allen Crane and her husband, Jerry, of Shawnee, Kan; four grandchildren, Wesley Crane and his wife, Jennifer, of Kansas City, Laton Crane and his wife, Nancy, of Roeland Park, Kan., Denise Crane of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Suzanne Congrove and her husband, Andrew, of Shawnee, Kan.; eight great-grandchildren, Joshua, Cannon, Carter, Collin, Jake, Jack, Luke and Sydney; sister Flora Toalson of Columbia; brothers Frank Worstell of Salasaw, Okla., and Gean Worstell of Rolla and Paul Worstell of Salem, along with many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Allen's parents, Charles and Minnie May; three brothers, Sylvester, Lore, and Ted Worstell; and her husband, Harold Laton Allen, died earlier.

Visitation will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 E. Services will immediately follow.
