Mireya del Castillo, born in Camagüey, Cuba to César Alvarez Fuentes and Ernestina Betancourt, passed away on June 17, 2013 at Kansas City Hospice House surrounded by her family. Mireya practiced law in her native city before coming to the United States. She held a JD from the University of Havana and a MS in Library Science from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. She was Head Cataloger at Rockhurst College in Kansas City before relocating to Columbia to work at the University’s Ellis Library where she had several positions as Cataloger, Head of Monographs Cataloging and Director of Title II Grants. She cataloged records at the University Archives and the Law Library. She remained in Columbia during her retirement until a recent illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Camilo Samayoa. She is survived by her two sons, Camilo Samayoa and his wife Marcia Zorilla Samayoa of Hollywood, Florida and José Samayoa and his wife Judy Samayoa of Leawood, Kansas, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and ex-husband Eduardo del Castillo of Columbia, Missouri.
A Memorial Mass will be held at the Newman Center in Columbia at date to be announced. Donations in her memory may be sent to the Central Missouri Humane Society, 616 Big Bear Blvd., Columbia, MO 65202.
