Sophie Baker, of Columbia, May 21, 1924 — June 21, 2013

Sophie Baker, 89, of Columbia, MO, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013.

She was born May 21, 1924 in Madison, IL to the late Louis and Mary (Jagroff) Gushleff.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church.

During WWII, Sophie worked in the Army Depot coordinating railroad supply shipments in Granite City, IL. On November 19, 1950, she married John Baker. Sophie was a homemaker and loving mother of five. She liked traveling, playing golf, and following the Mizzou Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. Sophie was generous with her time as a hospital volunteer. In 1980, she moved to Columbia from the St. Louis area and continued to volunteer at Columbia Regional Hospital for 30 years. She also enjoyed frequent trips to the casino.

Sophie is survived by her children: Marty Baker (wife, Linda) of Little Rock, AR, Mark Baker (wife, Lynn) of St. Louis, MO, Kevin Baker (wife, Dee Dee) of Bradley, IL, Mary Jane Scieszinski (husband, Greg) of Clive, IA and Laura Williamson (husband, David) of Columbia, MO; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Baker, her parents, three brothers and one sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, MO.
