Vanderbilt dismisses football players

Monday, July 1, 2013 | 9:06 p.m. CDT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Police say they're continuing to investigate an alleged June 23 sexual assault at a Vanderbilt University dormitory, two days after the school dismissed four players from the football team and kicked them off campus.

No arrests have been made. Nashville police issued a statement Monday saying "decisions in regard to charges will be made at the appropriate time as warranted by the investigation, which is expected to remain open and active into the near future."

Vanderbilt announced Saturday that four players — none of whom it named — were dismissed from the team and on interim suspension from the university. They can't return to campus without permission from Vanderbilt's office of student conduct and academic integrity.

Police said the school's decision was related to the investigation, which began Wednesday.
