Sunday, July 14, 2013 | 4:51 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — Chet Jones was arrested Saturday evening after the Boone County Sheriff's Department was notified of a stolen vehicle by a license plate reader near the Lake of the Woods exit on Interstate 70.

The arrest came just two weeks after a similar incident in which Jones was stopped on Clark Lane near the U.S. 63 connector in a Honda that had been reported stolen days earlier.

Jones, 32, of Jefferson City, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree tampering of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license Saturday night. He was also charged with violating parole and was taken into custody on a no bond warrant, Boone County Sheriff's Sgt. Philip Smith said Sunday morning.

While being processed, Jones was found in possession of methamphetamine, which led to an additional charge of possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility, Smith said. He was being held at Boone County Jail on Sunday morning.

Jones was charged with first-degree tampering of a motor vehicle for the June 30 arrest and is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on those charges July 25. In May 2005, Jones pleaded guilty to stealing a motor vehicle, according to court records.

Boone County Sheriff's Department make separate stolen car arrests

Two hours before Jones was arrested, a Columbia man and woman were arrested after being found driving a stolen car.

The driver, Bobbi Jo Leach, 37, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle with a bond of $4,500, Smith said Saturday night. The Boone County Sheriff's Department's Pro-Active Unit found Leach at a traffic stop in the 1800 block of Paris Road. The vehicle was allegedly stolen on July 5 from a residence on Rebecca Drive.

According to the sheriff's department, a woman named Bobbi Jo Carter was released from Boone County Jail after paying a $4,500 bond for first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle.

The passenger, Christopher David Davidson, 42, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree tampering with a motor vehicle. Davidson was also arrested for violating parole and was being held at Boone County jail on a no bond warrant Sunday morning, Smith said.
