Boone County Fair to start next week with new additions

Thursday, July 18, 2013 | 6:00 a.m. CDT; updated 9:47 a.m. CDT, Monday, July 22, 2013

COLUMBIA — Prepare to be swept off your feet by "A Boone County Love-A-Fair," the Boone County Fair's theme for 2013.

The annual fair opens Tuesday at 4 p.m., but fair events begin Saturday with the 4-H/FFA Horse Show Games. The games start at 5 p.m. and take place in the Horse Arena.

Almost KISS will headline entertainment this year. The KISS tribute band performs at 9:15 p.m. Friday.

New additions to the fair this year are several magician and illusionist shows, new bands and a car show Saturday afternoon.

This year the fair will feature local charities each day, something they haven't done at previous fairs, fair event planner Tracy Mulligan said. Each charity will have a different fundraiser.

One will be the "Rocking for Rainbow House" battle of the bands planned for Thursday, Mulligan said.

"Each vote costs a dollar, and all the proceeds go directly to the Rainbow House," she said.

Admission to the fair is $10. Children 6 and younger are free. Admission will be half-price on Tuesday and Thursday. Admission includes grandstand events, but not carnival rides.

The carnival runs from Tuesday through Saturday. Wristbands for unlimited rides are $15. On Saturday afternoon there will be a special. If you bring a buddy, you can get two wristbands for $15.

The fair ends July 27 and activities wrap up the next day.

Supervising editor is Katie Moritz.
