'Company' opened on Broadway in April of 1970. When the musical opened the critics claimed it didn't look like any other show or it didn't feel like any other show.
The term “concept musical” was initiated with Harold Prince's direction. Forty years later, it has become a landmark musical with Sondheim's brilliant music and lyrics and the book by George Furth. Many musicals have followed in its footsteps but its seemingly plotless plot, its abstract set, and its vaudevillian format made it one of a kind in breaking new ground.
Sondheim went on the give us a series of wondrous musicals for the rest of the century, but 'Company' remained his break through musical in his rise to the top in musical theatre.
The musical will open in the Assembly Hall at Central Methodist University on Friday, July 26 at 7:30 P.M., a second performance on Saturday, July 27 at 7:30 P.M., and a matinee on Sunday, July 28 at 2:00 P.M.
