Floyd Allen 'Chuck' Townsend, Aug. 7, 1927 — July 23, 2013

Floyd Allen “Chuck” Townsend, 85, passed away at Lenoir Care Center in Columbia on July 23, 2013. Mr. Townsend was born August 7th, 1927 to Charles Leonard Townsend and Cora Belle Buchanan Townsend in Sycamore Landing, Tennessee. He was married to Shirley Jean Krause on May 31st, 1952 in Boone County, Arkansas.

Mr. Townsend graduated from Caruthersville High School in 1945. He went on to receive a Bachelors in Education from Arkansas State College in 1951 and a Masters of Education from the University of Missouri in 1953. He served as Corporal in the United States Air Corps, 46th Troop Carrier Squad in Korea and served in WWII, receiving a Victory Medal and Army of Occupation (Japan) Medal.

Mr. Townsend was a teacher and principal at Sweet Springs Missouri High School and was the Superintendant of schools in Bronaugh, Missouri. He was a textbook representative for Charles E. Merrill Books for 2 years and then joined Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company as a sales rep in 1963 and worked for them in a variety of positions for the next 40 years. He retired from Houghton Mifflin as Director of national sales. He was a longtime member of Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia and was a past member of the Columbia Evening Lions Club.

He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and friend who was very active in his children and grandchildren’s activities including Boy Scouts, camping, and sports. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing with his family. Chuck and his family greatly appreciated all the wonderful care and compassion he received over the past three years from his other family, the staff at Lenoir Care Center.

He is survived by his three children, Misty (Glenn) Langston of Boonville, Jeanne (Lyle) Wheeler of Columbia, and David (Kerry) Townsend of Columbia; six grandchildren, Sarah Langston of Columbia, South Carolina and Jodie Langston, Mike Wheeler, Jon Wheeler, Blair Townsend, and Charlie Townsend all of Columbia, Missouri; two sisters, Allie Warren of Waverly, Tennessee and Jean Gooden of Caruthersville, MO; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Cora Belle; his wife, Shirley; brothers, William “Buss” Townsend, Ewell Townsend, and Charles Townsend; sisters, Madge Williams and Ollie Townsend; and grandson, Joseph Wheeler.

Visitation will be held at Memorial Funeral Home at 12:00 pm on Sunday, July 28th, 2013 and Funeral Service to commence at 2:00 pm. Burial will immediately follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Missouri United Methodist Church or Columbia Evening Lions–Lions Eye Bank.
