At the end of last school year, Boone Hospital Center launched an innovative program to help Columbia kids learn about the benefits of exercise and activity. Kids on Track encouraged children 14 and under to run, walk or bike 26.2 miles, a full marathon, during the summer.

More than 1,000 students participated in Kids on Track.

On Thursday, Aug. 8, the kids completed their final 1.2 miles and crossed the finish line, marking the end of their summer-long marathon. A special celebration was held at Stephens Lake Park in Columbia with games, activities and prizes.

“This year we saw a record number of participants and we can’t wait to cheer on these kids as they complete their summer of healthy activity,” said Jeff Zimmermann, Health Promotions Manager. “We know that exposing our youth to exercise at an early age can create positive habits for the rest of their lives.”

The program will be back next year. Local parents and students should watch for information in the spring about how to join Kids on Track 2014!
