COLUMBIA — A public meeting on the first phase of construction of the Gans Creek Recreation Area will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Activities and Recreation Center on 1701 W. Ash Street.

The first phase will develop 50 acres of the park, which is planned to eventually cover 320 acres, said Toney Lowery, senior park planner in the Parks and Recreation Department.

With an estimated cost of $1.7 million, the first phase will include sports fields, a parking shelter, trails, playgrounds, a dog park and restrooms, Lowery said.

"There's no funding in place for anything more than what we're showing tonight," Lowery said.

Supervising editor is Richard Webner.
