A gas pipe at the corner of Hickman Avenue and Eighth Street started leaking Thursday night.

COLUMBIA — A gas leak shut down Eighth Street and Hickman Avenue near their intersection Friday morning.

The gas leak was caused by a minor leak at the joint of a gas main, Ameren Missouri spokesman Bryan Daniels said.

The leak caused city buses and cars driving to Jefferson Middle School to be diverted onto Seventh Street, said Michelle Baumstark, Columbia Public Schools spokeswoman.

Daniels said Ameren personnel told school administrators there were no safety concerns related to the leak.

Repairs were expected to be completed before Jefferson Middle School's dismissal Friday afternoon, he said.
