SPORTS BRIEFLY: Missouri volleyball tops Fairfield, gymnastics team selects captains

COLUMBIA — Missouri volleyball brought its record to 5-0 with a three-set victory (25-16, 25-11, 25-17) over Fairfield in Connecticut on Thursday night. Fairfield is the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion. 

Senior setter Molly Kreklow dished out 37 assists, while junior libero Sarah Meister tallied 14 digs. Senior Lisa Henning and freshman Carly Kan had 10 kills each.

Missouri faces Yale —the defending Ivy League champion — at 6 p.m. Friday to kick off the Tigers' play in the Yale Invitational.  

MU Athletic Department to hold national anthem tryouts 

The MU Athletic Department will hold open tryouts on the main floor of Mizzou Arena for anyone who wants to sing the "The Star-Spangled Banner" at home men's or women's basketball games and other events, according to a news release.

Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 17. Parking will be available in Lot I or Lot O, and participants should enter through the north entrance of the arena.

Gymnastics team selects captains

The Missouri gymnastics team and coaches chose senior Katelyn Trevino and junior Rebecca Johnson to be the 2013-14 gymnastics captains, according to a news release. 

Both players are back after injuries. Trevino was on the 2013 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll and won the Big 12 Championship floor title in 2012 with a personal best of 9.900. Johnson was a key vaulter in 2010 and also earned a spot on the 2013 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll.
