Barthena L. Barnes, 99, of Columbia passed away, Monday, September 9, 2013 at The Neighborhoods.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Little Bonne Femme Baptist Church with Rev Brian Ford officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, September 16, 2013 at Parker Funeral Service. Burial will be at Barnes Cemetery, east of Deer Park on Barnes Chapel Road.

Barthena Allen Barnes was born at Deer Park in Boone County on January 1, 1914 to Emerson D. (“Emmett”) and Annie Hubbard Allen.

Mrs. Barnes attended Deer Park school in Boone County and graduated from Hickman High School in 1932. After attending the University of Missouri, she taught elementary school in the one-room Carlyle and Barnes schools in rural Boone County. She married Dysart Conner Barnes in Columbia on August 4, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1997.

Mrs. Barnes was a life-long, active member of Little Bonne Femme Baptist Church. She was also active in the Deer Park and New Haven School PTAs for many years, serving as president at both the local and district levels. She was a community leader in the Deer Park 4-H club and worked with both county-wide and district 4-H events and activities. She served for many years on the Daniel Boone Regional Library Board. When her daughters were grown, she taught knitting at Sears’s in downtown Columbia. She was an avid gardener and loved sewing, quilting and handwork of all kinds. Over the past 45 years, it has been rare for “Grandma Bart” to be without at least one handwork project in progress for a grandchild or great-grandchild. Until her death, she read prolifically, worked crossword puzzles each day and followed college football, basketball and NASCAR.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by three daughters: Kathryn Scheidt (Robert) of South Bend, IN, Elaine Davidson (Norman) of Lake Charles, LA and Marjorie Marberry (Jim) of Columbia. She is also survived by one sister Margaret Paul of Dover, DE, eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by eight brothers, five sisters, and one great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Barnes Cemetery Association (c/o Sam Owen, 101051 E. Johnson Cemetery Road, Ashland, MO 65010) or to Little Bonne Femme Baptist Church in her name.
