Thomas Matthew Rush, beloved husband of Carly and proud father of Alleia, passed away September 10 at his home in Columbia, Mo. He was 41. Tom was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 1, 1972 to Richard and Judy Rush of Grain Valley. His older brothers, Rick Jr. (Jill) and Tim (Michelle), were delighted to have another sibling to add to the fun and mischief. On August 1, 2008, Tom married the love of his life, Carly Walters. Tom enjoyed being a stepdad to Kolten and Matt. He valued the opportunity to share and participate in their activities. Their lives were blessed when Alleia joined the family in 2010.

Tom was a 1990 graduate of Grain Valley High School. In 1995, Tom earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri. At MU, he enjoyed the fellowship of the Farmhouse fraternity. Tom had a successful career as a senior grain merchandiser for MFA for 14 years. His specialty was soy beans and wheat.

Tom was a great outdoorsman. He enjoyed camping trips with his family, canoeing, fishing and hunting. One fishing trip at Bull Shoals, we were so excited to be catching so many white bass, they were practically jumping in the boat. Tom was the lookout, perched on the bow of the boat. He was pointing out where the schools of fish were. So much fun with him saying, “The whites is a running, Ma.” Tom could always make us laugh and cheer our hearts.

Tom was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hubert and Nelva Rush and his uncle, Dr. Don Whitener.

Besides his immediate family, survivors include Carly’s parents, Mike and Deloris Walters; her sisters Carrie Walters and Kimberly (Tony) Carroll; uncles J.E. (Doc) Whitener (Mary), Ken Rush, and Jeff Rush (Beth); grandparents, J.E. and Jean Whitener; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to Mental Health America. Donations can be made online or by mail to the Mental Health Gift Office, 2000 N. Beauregard St., 6th Floor, Alexandria, VA 22311.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening, September 17th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Royer Funeral Home, 100 Royer Lane, Grain Valley, MO. Services will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 18.

The highest tribute to our loved one is not grief, but gratitude. We are grateful for every moment we had with Tom.
