Charles Nauert, former MU history professor, died Sunday

COLUMBIA – Charles Nauert of Overland Park, Kan., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013. He was 85 years old. 

He was born July 26, 1928, in Quincy, Ill., to Helen C. Nauert and Charles G. Nauert Sr.

Mr. Nauert earned his doctorate from the University of Illinois in 1955. After graduating, he held positions at Bowdoin College in Maine and Williams College in Massachusetts before moving to Missouri.

He was a professor of history at MU until he retired in 1999. 

The University of Missouri System granted Mr. Nauert the Thomas Jefferson Award in 1991 for his teaching, scholarship and service. 

Mr. Nauert lived in Columbia from 1961 until 2009. He moved to Overland Park with his wife, Jean, to be near her family as her Parkinson's disease became more severe. His wife died on May 6.

Mr. Nauert is survived by his two sons, Paul Nauert, of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Jon Nauert, of Mount Vernon, Wash. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 123 S. Ninth St., in Columbia.
