ROSE NOLEN: In America, we can't live without people

Tuesday, October 8, 2013 | 6:00 a.m. CDT; updated 5:56 a.m. CDT, Wednesday, October 9, 2013

It is amazing that people are expected to work without pay. There are people among us who should never be without a paid job. These are the people on whom we all depend even when we don’t realize it.

These people in Congress who shut the government down need to be fired themselves. We cannot afford to have our government shut down. There are too many positions that are too important to be unstaffed. Certainly, we need law enforcement officers on duty at all times. We never know what can happen with no one watching out for us.

We live in an uncertain world. Things can go wrong any place, any time. We have too many areas of our lives that are unmanned. We never know when we are going to need help. We cannot live without firemen, for example.

We need to make up our minds that we need people. We have designed our lives to be dependent upon others. It is ridiculous to imagine that we can get along alone.

It is unfortunate that many people do not like the president of these United States. The language many use in discussing him is unfortunate. Some people in America are racist, and they can’t get over it. People who dislike people of other races are in for a hard time because ultimately white people will be a minority.

It is in the best interests of Americans to learn to get along with each other. We have many immigrants in our country. We need to learn to find a way to make our country big enough for all kinds of people. There is going to be no place in the country for people who want to live by themselves and with others who are like them.

This is a democracy and people are determined to be free. Racists need to get over themselves. We all have to live by the rules, and there will never again be a place in America for people who can’t live with other people.
There are always going to be people who don’t like certain laws. They have to learn to live with them until they can be changed. Nobody knows this better than African-Americans.

We need our government at work.

I suspect there will be some comments concerning this piece. Here are mine. The caption is VERY odd. Are we supposed to infer that there are other countries who can get along without people? How can a political subdivision call itself a country if it in fact has no people.

As for there being those who don't like the current President, that could be said about any number of previous Presidents. Even if we discount the states in the Confereracy, there were those who didn't like Abraham Lincoln. There were those who didn't like Harding and Nixon (and I would say rightly so), and there were those who for damned sure didn't like Franklin D. Roosevelt, and weren't bashful about saying so!

Well I suppose then I should have adored Jimmy Carter. After all, Carter is white and has a degree in Nuclear Engineering. How much more appealing could a President possibly be to me than that*? Well I thought Carter was a terrible president. I admire Carter as an obviously caring individual, but definitely NOT as President. Some people have also said the same for Herbert Hoover (who, other than his presidency, had an excellent record as a humanitarian).

*- Surely you are aware that engineers can do no wrong. My Goodness! What ARE they teaching in school these days? :)

Ellis: The sentence most odd to me was this one: "People who dislike people of other races are in for a hard time because ultimately white people will be a minority."

First, that's a not-so-veiled threat implying "Once we get on top, you're toast."

You forget that I am, and have been, mobile, so "poo" on your threat. Your threat has no power over me whatsoever.

Second, white people are the only people who dislike other people?

Seems to me the people who really dislike other people are black people who harm black people on a rather frequent basis far beyond their demographic percentage.

And Hispanics seem to have serious problems with black people, too.*** Maybe Rose's sentence would have been more accurate if stated, "[Black]**** people who dislike people [of other races, including their own] are in for a hard time because ultimately [Hispanic] people will be a [majority].

No, the real racists here are folks like Rose who remain victims of their own past, retaining a dead social culture full of dead social philosophies, "victims" of long-ago and irrelevant oppressors.

It's a life-strategy.

Folks like Rose can't get past it and...I believe...never will. The only hope remaining is that small but growing group of young black folks who have finally figured out that, if you want to "make it" in this world and garner respect, it is best to abandon a culture whose philosophies keep folks perpetually stuck in a social mud.

Arabs should take note, too.

BTW, black folks are now THIRD or close to third on the US demographic list. I guess that's good news for folks like me who consider ourselves dermally white (but DNA mongrels originating in Africa with stop-overs in Russia, Wales, and I think one close encounter of the first kind in a Sioux teepee that all started in Siberia, of course) and have to listen to perpetual conversation-stoppers like "You're racist".

Let the Hispanics hear it for a couple of hundred more years. As for me, my ears are tired of it, and I no longer care. I doubt Hispanics will care much, either.

***Let's be blunt. Name me a country/group of people anywhere in the world that likes ANY culture, including black culture, possessing a philosophy that leads to a social no-mans-land.

****[Brackets] are my changes.

Michael:

Your points are well made. As you know, I made a living out of working with Hispanics, as much as working with other group of people. I didn't plan it that way; it just happened. I am very glad that it did happen, although had I known it would happen I would have taken pains to first become fluent in Spanish.

I object to the present concept of "Hispanic." It cannot be taken as a racial term, because persons who speak Spanish do not constitute a single race. It also cannot be taken as being either black or white, because there are black persons who speak Spanish. Surely everyone has heard of the Dominican Republic, and Central American republics like Costa Rica have significant black, Spanish-speaking minorities.

Further, I'd argue that it cannot be taken as a single, identifiable culture: there are significant differences between Argentine and Mexican cultures, for example.

For the record, the number of "Hispanics" in the United States has already surpassed the number of its black citizens. Blacks are no longer the largest minority group in the United States. Don't take my word for that, check it out.

I don't care much for threats, regardless of who makes them or what they're about.

Ellis: I concede your greater knowledge of things "hispanic".

IMO, humans are just that....humans....not much different from any other human. The differences are only subtle, in part relating to the fact that our ancestors periodically found themselves rather genetically isolated (oceans, mountain ranges, etc.) until they discovered cruise chips, roadgraders, and the neighboring young lovelies previously inaccessable. We all ended up genetic mongrels, but we all date from Africa. The nuclear and mitochondrial DNA data gets more convincing each and every day.

I discriminate, but not against visual human traits. I am a HEAVY discriminator against certain human behaviors and cultures incompatible with good social order and progression. I won't tolerate bad behavior, I won't tolerate rotten life philosophies/strategies/decisions that lead to bad outcomes, and I won't tolerate cultures that remain mired in ancient history.

I also "profile". Here's a truth: If I am in my car stopped at a light/sign, and you are walking by me dressed like a thug, staring at me like a thug, and wearing heavy metal and ink like a thug, you are going to hear my car locks going down and see my hand getting just a mite closer to an instrument designed to stop you if need be. A lot of white, black, brown, purple, green, and chartreuse losers demonstrating their "personal individuality" have heard that "click", and I don't care whether they are offended or not (PS: I've yet to "click" down on guys/gals dressed nicely and looking/acting like they wish my respect. It is NOT hard to tell the difference.)

This world is going forward, and the only question a culture (or individual) needs to ask is "Are we going, too?"

A "yes" or "no" makes all the difference in the world.

I didn't know I didn't like President Obama because I'm (apparently) a racist...I thought it was because he is incompetent.

Skip, you devil you! Using the "I" word. Next you'll be describing Congress the same way.

There is a family in Columbia that is lucky to have Rose as a member. She is a nice lady. That being said, she needs to get over the racism stuff. It's worn out for most people, from Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, NAACP, and now POTUS, it's just meat overcooked. Pigfordgate won't happen again; the great white guilt is a thing of few left except young white liberal college girls. What the African-American community need worry about is the rising black-on-black murder rate and the growing number of teen age girls being referred to as "my baby's momma". The government and old white men can't fix that. Besides, doesn't she know that blacks are a shoe-in for Democrats (LBJ had it right when he said "N******Rs will be ours for the next 200 years), and that the minority of preference for Democrats are now Hispanics, not blacks? Just sayn'.....
