John Overton Young, 84, served in Army, studied agriculture at MU

COLUMBIA — John Overton Young of Springfield died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in Springfield. He was 84.

He was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Woodlandville to Orin T. and Myrtie Phillippi Young.

Mr. Young attended Hickman High School and received a bachelor's degree from MU, where he studied agriculture.

He married Anna Lee Johnson on Oct. 26, 1951. They were married for 62 years.

Mr. Young served as a first lieutenant in the Army for two years. He worked for Farm Bureau Insurance in Jefferson City for 17 years and for American National Insurance in Springfield for 10 years.

Growing up, he attended Woodlandville United Methodist Church. He later was a member of King's Way United Methodist Church in Springfield, where his services were held Oct. 3.

Evelyn Fenton of Columbia grew up attending church activities such as Bible study with Mr. Young at Woodlandville United Methodist Church.

"He was just a good man," she said. "He was a good citizen."

Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Anna Lee Johnson; four daughters, Jane Jordan and husband Jim of Jefferson City, Jonalee McLaughlin and husband Paul of Kansas City, Judy Jacobs and husband Andy of Bulverde, Texas, and Jan Millington and husband Tom of Springfield; a son, Jeff Young, and his wife, Kristin, of Springfield; a sister, Ruth Davis, and her husband, Rollo, of Moore, Okla.; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

Three brothers, Fred Young, Roy Young and Bill Young, and a sister, Nina Phillips, died earlier.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Columbarium at King's Way United Methodist Church.
