COLUMBIA — With the Kewpie Classic in the books and the district tournament knocking on the door, Hickman softball continued its home stretch of the season by beating Troy-Buchanan 12-3 on Friday.
Both teams started off scoreless through the first two innings until the Kewpies unleashed a seven-run barrage in the bottom of the third. The Trojans responded with three runs in the top of the fifth, but the Kewpies scored five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the win.
Sophomore Brittany Nelson accounted for four of Hickman's runs, including a 3 RBI double in the sixth. Junior Allison Farris and senior Riley Wilson each had a pair of runs.
Along with her run contribution, Greene threw a complete game, giving up only three runs.
"We never really panic," Greene said. "I think when we got through the lineup once, we had our timing down. We just really focused in and had a good attitude."
The Kewpies are 16-8 on the season. The game against Fort Zumwalt South on Saturday is Hickman's final game before districts.
Coach Courtney Haskell said the win came at a crucial point in the season.
"That's probably the best game we've played all season, which is good because it's the end of the season and that's how we're supposed to be playing," Haskell said.
