Powell served in Army, worked at Jefferson Junior High School, Hickman High School

COLUMBIA — E. Dale Powell of Columbia died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013. He was 81.

Mr. Powell was born Nov. 12, 1931, in Harrisburg to Cora Blanche (Stidham) and Ermine Ross Powell.

He married Jeanne Smith on June 29, 1957.

Mr. Powell served in the U.S. Army Artillery and Army Reserves. After his time in the military, he spent several years teaching and coaching at Jefferson Junior High School. He then worked as East Hall principal at Hickman High School for more than 20 years.

Mr. Powell also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and gardening.

Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Jeanne Smith; two daughters, Holley Smothers and her husband, Greg, of Jefferson City and Mary Anne Dutemple and her husband, John, of St. Louis; two sisters, Janet VaNess and her husband, Everett, of Independence and Karen Harshbarger and her husband, Andy, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Ricky Powell and his wife, Judy, of Boonville; three grandchildren, KariLynn Reeves and her husband, Jason, of Overland Park, Kan., David LaPointe and his wife, Elizabeth, of Columbia and Matthew LaPointe of Jefferson City; and a brother-in-law, George Edward Smith and his wife, Sherrel, of Kansas.

A brother, Dean Powell, died earlier.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
