LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Government must continue working to avoid financial disaster

Monday, October 21, 2013 | 1:24 p.m. CDT

Now is not the time to grandstand around avoiding the governmental disaster. This is not even the time to take a deep breath. All resources ought to be directed toward avoiding the next governmental financial precipice.

Vice President Joe Biden's ability to navigate and negotiate relationships, alliances and agreements with legislators ought to be utilized now. The already-established vested interest of Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi, and, yes, John Boehner ought to be utilized along with John McCain, Steve King and all of the others who have shown an interest in avoiding a governmental shutdown.

This is no time for speeches. It is time to get to work. Our country's prestige, economic standing and influence in all world matters depend on our work in the next few months.
