James Alan Carey loved to barbeque, enjoyed outdoor activities

COLUMBIA — James Alan Carey died Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, in Harlingen, Texas. He was 54.

Mr. Carey was born Sept. 21, 1959, in Columbia, to Marjorie Maxine and Thomas J. Carey. He graduated from Hickman High School in June 1978.

Mr. Carey was described as warm and loving.He liked to barbecue, prepare smoked meats and participate in chili cook-offs.

He enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, riding dirt bikes, golf and baseball. He played for the Columbia Stags and several softball teams.

His parents; and a nephew, Gregory Carey, died earlier.

Mr. Carey is survived by three brothers, Ronald Carey, of Sabillasville, Md., Mike Carey and his wife, Chris, of Santa Rosa, Texas, Dennis Carey and his wife, Dian, of Mexico, Mo.; two sisters, Julie Hickey and her husband, John, of Columbia, and Pamela Duesenberg, of Chesterfield, Mo.; eight nieces; and six nephews.

A visitation will be held at noon Friday at First Christian Church, 101 N. Tenth St. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.
