COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Almeta Crayton, who died Monday at 53,will be held at noon Nov. 1 at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 407 E. Broadway in Columbia. Visitation will be held prior to the services from 10 a.m. to noon at the church.
Crayton was Columbia's first black councilwoman. She was elected to the First Ward in 1999, and she served for three terms.
She devoted herself to helping the people of Columbia by creating safer environments for youth and working to close the city's economic gap. One of her well-known contributions to the city was Everyone Eats!, the Thanksgiving community dinner she organized each year. Last year's meal was the 15th.
