August 2005 — President George W. Bush signs the Energy Policy Act of 2005, requiring oil companies to add ethanol to their gasoline. Called the Renewable Fuel Standard, this mandate begins with a 4-billion-gallon requirement in 2006 and approximatelydoubles by 2012. Corn is selling for $1.95 a bushel.
