COLUMBIA — The Missourian published a life story about Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt on Nov. 4, 2001.
"We tried to live up to his example," said Bob Thompson, a Tribune sports writer at the time. "No one ever called in sick. We didn't want to disappoint him."
Ryan Ferguson has been serving a 40-year sentence in the Jefferson City Correctional Center for second-degree murder and first-degree robbery in Heitholt's death. His conviction was overturned Tuesday by the Missouri Court of Appeals Western District.
