LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Congress should protect our liberties

Wednesday, November 13, 2013 | 12:00 p.m. CST

Our Founding Fathers and Mothers fought, as the Constitution's preamble says, "to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity."  History shows us that "the Blessings of Liberty" are never given freely.

On November 19, 1865, at the dedication of the cemetery after the Battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle on our country's soil that claimed lives of over 50,000 men, Abraham Lincoln said, "We cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract."

This is why if Congress really wanted to protect the hallowed ground of our soldiers they would first protect their own "hallowed ground" by honoring their oath to protect our liberties, in which they have sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution. Because this is why the soldiers fought and died — "to secure the Blessings of Liberty." But instead they have voted away our liberties in the guise of "security."

Our Founders had no intention of throwing off the bands of oppression only to have the same tyranny repackage itself under the illusion of "protection." Benjamin Franklin said, "Those that exchange liberty for safety will get or deserve neither."

In fact our Founders trusted in God's protection, as they said, "with a firm Reliance on the protection of divine Providence." Our country was founded with a moral foundation of the highest law of right and wrong. The Declaration refers to it as "the Laws of Nature and Nature's God."

But this moral law is the crux of the matter – "We hold these truths."  Because our Liberty is fundamentally derived from "these truths" in "Nature and Nature's God" – God's Law, we can only "secure the Blessings of Liberty" IF "we hold these truths."

Our founding documents are worthless if principles of truth are not operating in our government. Nor can our country "secure the Blessings of Liberty" if "these truths" are not living in the hearts and minds of its people.

It is the duty of every American in their generations to "hold these truths" and "secure the Blessings of Liberty" to ourselves, not for ourselves, and our children. Especially if one believes in Christ who said He is the Truth, John 14:6.

Because it is knowing the truth that makes us free, John 8:32.
