HONOLULU — The athletics director at the University of Hawaii was injured as he intervened in a fight that broke out after a women's tournament basketball game.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports a brawl broke out Sunday night among fans behind the West Virginia University bench as awards were being prepared for the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic tournament.

West Virginia defeated Hawaii 59-56 in the championship game.

Athletic director Ben Jay said he rushed over to intervene in the fight. He says he tried to peel people off and break up the fight but got hit with something in his back.

He said his back "spasmed up."

He received treatment from emergency medical technicians

He was able to walk out under his own power after about 20 minutes.
