Almeta Crayton, former City Council member and well-known civic servant, devoted much of her life to service in Columbia, particularly the First Ward. She was perhaps best known for her generosity at Thanksgiving, mustering volunteers to feed anyone who stepped through the door of her Everyone Eats! community dinner. Crayton died Oct. 21. She was 53. (This coverage is available to Missourian digital members.)
Wednesday's volunteers will help prepare the food and set up the dining area. Thanksgiving Day volunteers will serve the meal from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a news release for the event.
The meal will be held at Stephens College's Stamper Commons at 1300 E. Broadway.
Food donations will be welcome. Dry goods, cooking supplies and other tools can be dropped off at two locations:
- 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at The Club at Old Hawthorne, 6221 State Highway WW.
- 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the United Way offices at 105 E. Ash St.
Those preparing food may bring it to Stamper Commons on Thursday.
The menu will include turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, macaroni and cheese, greens, cornbread, cranberry sauce, salad, chitlins, cobblers, ice cream, yogurt, and pie.
This year's event is being called Almeta Crayton's Everybody Eats. Crayton, who ran the annual food drive, died Oct. 21.
Volunteers are needed from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 27 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 28.
