James P. 'Jimmy' Dorsey, Aug. 3, 1937 — Nov. 25, 2013

BOONVILLE — James P. "Jimmy" Dorsey, 76, of Boonville, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Cooper County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Dorsey was born in Columbia on Aug. 3, 1937, to Andrew T. and Jean Allen Dorsey Sr. He spent most of his early life in Columbia, except for three years in Rocheport.

He was involved in trucking most of his life, beginning as a driver for Midwest Brewing of Columbia. In 1975, he began a 26-year association with National Carriers Inc. of Liberal, Kan., first as a driver, then in 1977 as an owner-operator. Seven years later, he bought five trucks and became a small-fleet owner, with employees eventually growing to 15, before he downsized. He retired in 2007.

He was a member of Masonic Twilight Lodge No. 114, Aleppo Grotto, Columbia Shrine, Tiger Motor Patrol and Elks Lodge No. 594. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and MU sports.

He is survived by his wife, Patty; three daughters, Brenda Plute, Beverly McCulloch and Debbie Efting, all of Springfield; three sons, Steve Wright and his wife, Tammy, of Odessa, Jay Dorsey and his wife, Rebecca, of Blue Springs and Randy Polson and his wife, Angie, of Iconium; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Kitty Dorsey Gordon; two sons, Jim Dorsey Jr. and Rusty Polson; and two grandchildren, Josh Dorsey and Cheyene Davidson, died earlier.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.  Services will follow at noon Saturday with Masonic services officiated by Mitch Wiensting.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Cancer Research Center of Columbia, 3501 Berrywood Drive, Columbia, MO 65201; Shriners Hospital for Children,  2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63131-3597; or an organization of the donor's choice.
