Rachel Boyce began playing rugby two seasons ago in Columbia.
Last January I became part of a new family. It was a different family, my rugby family.
At the time I didn't have much going on and was looking for activities to get involved with throughout the community. I enjoy volunteer work, but it's not always consistent necessarily.
Roots 'N' Blues 'N' BBQ during the summer, True False Film Fest in the winter. There are a few other volunteer opportunities I participate in throughout the year, but I was looking for something more consistent to get involved with.
That's when I found rugby, the Mid-Mo Black Sheep Women's Rugby Club.
It's the only sport I've played where you can be enemies on the field and best friends off the field. It's a lot of fun and its own subculture.
People sometimes think you need to be super big and buff, but that's not necessarily the case. It was fun learning about the game by playing it and attending practices.
I still believe volunteering is super important and continue to volunteer myself. But for anyone looking for a new activity to get involved with, I'd recommend getting out there and trying new things. You never know, you may find your next favorite hobby or group of friends.
