Donald Unnerstall was a Columbia entrepreneur, served in Korea

COLUMBIA — Donald J. Unnerstall of Columbia died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, after a lengthy illness. He was 79.

Mr. Unnerstall was born July 20, 1934, in Chicago to John and Ethel Unnerstall.

In the 1950s, he served in Korea with the U.S. Army. He graduated from MU with a bachelor's degree in business and public administration.

Mr. Unnerstall owned several small businesses in Columbia and the Lake of the Ozarks area.

He married Peggy Dahl in 1977. The couple had one daughter together, Amanda Lee Unnerstall.

Mr. Unnerstall is survived by his wife; a daughter, Amanda Lee Unnerstall; and four step-children, Kimberly Medsker of Jefferson City, Kelly Maloney of Seattle, Larry Dahl of Ithica, N.Y., and Lisa Weaver of Columbia.

Services are being organized for the spring.

The family requested that, instead of flowers, friends perform a random act of kindness "in keeping with Don's philosophy."
