Dorothy Mae Sumpter was secretary for the Missouri Military Academy

COLUMBIA — Dorothy Mae Sumpter died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014. She was 85.

She was born April 23, 1928, in St. Louis, to James W. and Augusta K. (Horstman) Overstreet. She married Dale Sumpter on June 11, 1947.

Mrs. Sumpter was a member of Eastside Church of Christ. She served as the secretary of the Missouri Military Academy for 21 years and was active in the National Rural Mail Carriers Association.

Mrs. Sumpter is survived by her husband, Dale Sumpter; three sons, Stephen Bradley Sumpter, and his wife, Beverly, of Wright City, Richard Dale Sumpter, and his wife, Marilynn, of Warrenton, and Blake Alan Sumpter, and his wife, Peggy, of Tijeras, N.M.; a sister, Shirley Marshall, and her husband, George, of Bolivar; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A brother, James Roy Overstreet, died earlier.

Private graveside services will be at Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Jacksonville, Mo.
