Frank Lewis Edwards, 87, of Columbia passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2014. After several years of pain and suffering, he has made peace with his Lord and is now with his beloved wife, Esther. He is preceded in death by his wife and great grandson, Timothy David Grant, as well as his brothers and sisters.
Pastor Bruce Caldwell will be officiating a memorial service on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Memorial Funeral Home, with interment immediately following. Frank had chosen cremation as his final disposition, so his cremated remains would be with Esther. He wanted them to be together again for always.
Frank was born in Woodstock, Minnesota, on December 27, 1926, to George Lewis Edwards and Elma Myra Millen Edwards. Until a few years ago everyone thought Frank had been born in 1925. We found out that he had lied about his age to be able to serve during World War II. At the age of sixteen, he enlisted into the US Navy from October 1943- August 1945. After his service, Frank had several different occupations, auto mechanic, sheriff, police officer, volunteer fireman, carpenter, plumber, electrician, and contractor. He had also been a volunteer at the VA Hospital for several years. Frank was also involved with Citizens on Patrol with his wife.
Frank and Esther were foster parents to sixty-four children, while raising their own son.
Survivors include two sons, Alvin and George Edwards; three daughters, Sharon Durham (David), Jean Young (Don), and Colleen Welty (Gary); seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Columbia, Missouri.
