COLUMBIA —Helen Cartwright's emphasis on education and encouragement played an important role in each of her children achieving doctoral degrees.
Helen Cartwright of Columbia died at home Monday, Jan. 13, 2014. She was 88.
Mrs. Cartwright was born Aug. 9, 1925, in Memphis, Tenn., to Mildred and William Beeman. She graduated from high school as class valedictorian and began taking college courses in the 1960s while raising four children. She earned her doctorate in 1993.
She married Robert Cartwright, who was attending medical school at the University of Tennessee. The family moved to Columbia in 1965.
Mrs. Cartwright began her career at the Veterans Administration Hospital when it opened in 1973. She worked at the hospital until her retirement in 2005.
She also served as president of the Fairview Elementary PTA between 1967 and 1968, and the Columbia Council PTA between 1968 and 1970. She also volunteered with her daughters’ local Girl Scout troops.
Mrs. Cartwright is survived by her four children, Robert Cartwright, Jr., and his wife Mary, of Houston, Texas, Kimberly Cartwright and her husband, Charles Littrell, of Wombarra, Australia, Candy Cartwright Young, and her husband, Larry, Debi Cartwright, and her husband, Dorosh, all of Columbia; nine grandchildren, Chase, Sean and Lance Cartwright, of Houston, Texas, Zachary Young, of Indianapolis, Ind., Sydney Young, of Columbia, Devin Dorosh, of St. Louis, Eden, Helen and Katherine Littrell, all of Wombarra, Australia; two sisters, Mildred Wilson and her husband, Norman, and Katherine Harmon; and her friend and dance partner for more than 30 years, Lou Witte.
Her husband, Robert Cartwright, and a son-in-law, Douglas Dorosh, died earlier.
Visitation will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Funeral Chapel, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will follow at the chapel at 5 p.m.
