COLUMBIA — Boone County Associate Circuit Judge Larry Bryson announced Friday that he will retire at the end of the year.

Bryson has been the District 5 judge for the past 28 years and has been elected to the post seven times.

The judge noted in a statement that mandatory retirement rules would not allow him to fulfill another four-year term and that he is "committed to allowing the citizens of Boone County the privilege of election the next Division 5 judge. This will also allow all qualified candidates the opportunity to consider their declaration of candidacy."

The next elections for associate and circuit judge positions will be held in November.

Bryson's statement extended thanks to "all judges, attorneys, staff, fellow officeholders and citizens who have made these 28 years so fulfilling."

Bryson and his wife, Patti, live in Centralia.

Supervising editor is Scott Swafford.
