Museum of Art and Archaeology holds opening night at new location

Friday, February 7, 2014 | 9:42 p.m. CST
Alex Barker, director of the Museum of Art and Archaeology, speaks to an audience gathered for the grand opening of the Cast Gallery in February at Mizzou North. The gallery includes cast copies of original busts from ancient Greece.

COLUMBIA — The main lobby of Mizzou North was packed Friday night with both visitors and the Greek and Roman casts they had come to view.

Close to 100 people had stopped by for the MU Museum of Art and Archaeology's opening night for its cast gallery at its new Mizzou North location. The museum was previously housed at Pickard Hall.

Alex Barker, director of the Museum of Art and Archaeology, gave a brief speech to those in attendance, but the majority of the evening was given to allowing visitors to view the casts. MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin was among those who attended the gathering.

Mizzou North is still under renovation, and Barker said he hoped other galleries would be ready to open by late August.
