Four candidates chosen for Columbia Public Schools superintendent

COLUMBIA — Interviews are beginning this week of four candidates for the job of Columbia Public Schools superintendent.

Christine King, president of the Columbia School Board, said in an email that 18 people applied for the position.

The names of the four candidates will not be released until an undetermined number of finalists are selected, district spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said.

Community forums will be scheduled for residents to meet the finalists, King said.

In February 2009, public forums were held for then-candidates Chris Belcher and Skip Deming to meet with the public and answer questions. Belcher will retire at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

The district hopes to announce the superintendent for the 2014-15 school year by the end of the month, Baumstark said.

Supervising editor is Elizabeth Brixey.
