Battle boys basketball loses in OT in first round of districts

The Battle boys basketball team closed out its inaugural season Tuesday night with an 81-78 opening-round loss in the Class 4, District 4 tournament to St. Mary's of St. Louis. The game took place at Bishop DuBourg High School in St. Louis.

Battle (5-19) held a commanding 25-11 lead after the first quarter, but St. Mary's slowly chipped away at the deficit throughout the game. The lead was cut to 11 by halftime, and going into the fourth quarter the lead had fallen to six. 

St. Mary's finally closed the gap in the fourth quarter, sending the game into overtime with a score of 72-72. 

Battle junior Devonte Brown led the Spartans in scoring with 30 points. Sophomore Trey Smith added 18. 

St. Mary's will take on Gateway (St. Louis) at Bishop DuBourg on Thursday night in the second round of the District 4 tournament.
