Berndena Wilhelmina Wehmeyer Alexander of Rocheport died March 6, 2014, at the age of 96.

She was born Jan. 10, 1918, near Rocheport to Karl “Charlie” William and Ida Fredericka (Sieckman) Wehmeyer. She married Jesse William Alexander on Nov. 7, 1940.

Mrs. Alexander was a graduate of Rocheport High School and, after she married, worked alongside her husband for many years at Alexander Bros. Farms, their farm and orchard located near Rocheport.

She was a 4-H leader and lifelong member of the Rocheport United Methodist Church, where she was known for her kind smile, peach cobblers and apple butter. She loved to cook and took the time to teach her grandchildren and great-grandchildren some of her most treasured recipes.

She even enjoyed sleepovers with her great-granddaughters. Every fall, family and friends gathered at her home to make homemade apple butter, a tradition valued by the entire family.

Mrs. Alexander is survived by her children, Jesse Charles Alexander of Rocheport and Linda (Stuart) Voss of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Carla (Jon) Dyer, John (Veena) Voss, David (Genalee) Alexander, Matthew (Erin) Voss and Julia (Greg) Mees; eight great-grandchildren, Grace Dyer, Maggie Alexander, Katherine Dyer, Sam Alexander, Alexander Dyer, Hannah Mees, Benjamin Voss and Lauren Mees; two sisters, Vernetta Wehmeyer and Ileen Dometrorch; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband; one brother, Alvin Wehmeyer; and one sister, Helen Silvey, died earlier.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Rocheport United Methodist Church, with a luncheon to follow. Graveside services will be held that afternoon at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia.

Memorials may be made in Mrs. Alexander's honor to the Rocheport United Methodist Women in care of Rocheport United Methodist Church, 202 Columbia St., Rocheport, MO 65279, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
