Jane Russell was an avid tennis player, worked tirelessly for charity

Jane Russell was tireless both on the tennis court and in the numerous charitable and community organizations she was involved in.

Jane Myrl Bradbury Russell, formerly of Columbia but more recently of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., died Thursday, March 6, 2014. She was 80.

She was born March 17, 1933. She later married Garth S. Russell.

Mrs. Russell graduated from East High School in Nashville, Tenn. in 1951 before moving to Columbia to work at MU for almost 30 years. She retired to Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., full-time in 1992.

Jane was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was very active in different charitable and community organizations in Palm Beach Gardens. She was also an avid tennis player and the captain of a state-championship winning senior women's tennis team.

Mrs. Russell is survived by her husband, Garth S. Russell; four sons, Bruce Dier, Bryan Dier, David Russell Sr. and his wife, Maria, and Kyle Russell; a daughter, Karen Clunan and her husband, Doug; seven grandchildren, Ashleigh Russell, Kristin Haines, Stephanie Powers, Michael Clunan, Lauren Clunan, Kate Irving and David Russell Jr.; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home in Jupiter, Fla. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Palm Beach Gardens. A memorial service will be held in Columbia at a later date.

Memorial contributions can be made to Community Christian Counseling Center in Palm Beach Gardens, the Palm Beach County Hospice – Blue Team, or the East Nashville High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund in Nashville, Tennessee.
