COLUMBIA — Two Columbia residents died in an early-morning crash on U.S. 63 after a woman going the wrong way on the highway struck another driver head-on.

About 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, Chasity D. Vaughan, 35, was traveling south in a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder in the northbound lanes of U.S. 63 near the Vandiver Drive exit. Her car struck a 1994 Dodge Caravan driven by John M. Brenneman, 38, head-on.

Vaughan and Brenneman were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, and police do not believe that excessive speed contributed to the collision, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.

Police are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident.
