Elbert Stanley Wood, Oct. 12, 1958 - March 16, 2014, of Columbia

Elbert Stanley (Stan) Wood, 55, died at Landmark Hospital, Columbia, MO, Sunday, March 16, 2014 after a long illness.

Services will be held at 12:00 pm, Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Parker Funeral Service. Visitation will be from 11am to 12 pm Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery.

He was born October 12, 1958 in Montrose, Colorado to Bonnie H. Wood and W. Raymond Wood, but he lived in Columbia for all of his adult life.

He graduated from Hickman High School in 1977. After high school he obtained a B.A. in geography at the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1991. He was a research assistant in the Department of Agronomy during college, and in 1991 he developed a Geographic Information System for the Missouri Archaeological Survey. He was also a long-time cook at Ernie’s Cafe and kitchen manager at the Heidelberg Restaurant in Columbia, Missouri.

He became a member of the Army Reserve and National Guard between 1980 and 1989, attaining the rank of staff sergeant, and attended the Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Development Course in 1984. He became Chief of a section of the 3/75th Field Artillery, and Intelligence Sergeant for the 35tth DISCOM, Headquarters, Missouri National Guard, preparing strategic intelligence plans for the DISCOM commander. Among his military honors were the Army Achievement Medal in 1985 and 1989 and the Command Sergeant Major’s Award for Excellence in 1989. He was the lifetime head of a vast family of friends know as the Derelicts. He was a long-time member and participant in the Society for Creative Anachroism, an organization devoted to recreating arts and skills of 17th-century Europe. He became a specialist in computer-aided cartography after college, at first working for the Geographic Resources Center at the University of Missouri, Columbia, where he became a software specialist; when that facility closed he took a position with Schuyler House as a technical support technician and trainer until illness overcame him.

Survivors include his mother, Bonnie H. Heidy and father, W. Raymond Wood, his brothers D. Eric Wood and John Heidy, his sisters, Marigene Holtkamp, Karla Koskela, all of Columbia and Patty Wakeland of Texas and Deidre Forster of Nebraska.

In lieu of flowers please make contributions to the Stan Wood Memorial Fund which will be used to purchase a bench in his memory.
