Columbia Walmart parking lot partially closes after unattended suitcase found

COLUMBIA — Part of the parking lot at the Walmart at 415 Conley Road was closed Wednesday afternoon because of an unattended suitcase.

At 12:19 p.m., a 911 call from a customer alerted the Columbia Police Department to the black suitcase, left in a mulch planter near the center of the parking lot, according to a news release from the Columbia Fire Department, which later joined the police department at the scene.

Police and Columbia firefighters arrived shortly after and blocked off a portion of the parking lot while they investigated the suitcase. The responders determined the suitcase was empty after scanning it with a portable X-ray device.

Officers on duty confirmed there were no hazards and the parking lot was reopened at 2:30 p.m., Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief John Metz said. The owner of the suitcase is unknown.
