COLUMBIA — The Columbia College softball team split a two-game series against William Woods on Thursday at home.

The Cougars (10-7, 5-1 American Midwest Conference) suffered its first conference loss in the opener of the doubleheader against the Owls (16-9, 5-1), but also handed William Woods its first AMC loss.

The Owls leaned on pitcher MacKenzie Bowden in a complete-game shutout during the first matchup. Bowden struck out 12 and gave up three hits in the Cougars' 4-0 loss.

Columbia College got a complete game of its own from Taylor Richter in the second game and was able to put some offense together for her. The Cougars pulled ahead of the Owls for the first time Thursday in the fifth inning of the final game and held on for a 3-2 win.

Columbia College is scheduled to face Embry-Riddle on Monday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
