COLUMBIA — A 16-year-old female was found dead early Thursday morning, according to a Columbia Police Department news release sent Friday. Police have identified the victim as Morgan Myers of Columbia.

Police discovered her body at the Providence Suites motel* on the southeast corner of the intersection of Providence Road and Vandiver Drive around 5:45 a.m. Thursday.

A man called police and reported finding the girl unconscious in his room. Police were dispatched to the motel following the call, but the man was no longer at the scene when police arrived.

The girl had previously been reported as a runaway, according to the news release. She went missing early in March, and a detective with the Police Department has been trying to find her, Sgt. Joe Bernhard said Friday afternoon.

The police said the girl's death was not natural and the circumstances of how the death was reported led them to decide to investigate it as a homicide, Bernhard said.

According to the Boone County medical examiner's office, an autopsy on the girl had been completed Friday but the results were not yet available.

The Missourian will continue to update this story as details become available.
