COLUMBIA — A Columbia man was killed early Thursday morning when his motorcycle crashed on Vandiver Drive.

Gabriel A. Small, 39, was driving a 2005 Honda motorcycle west on Vandiver Drive near Wolcott Drive shortly before 2:30 a.m., according to a release from the Columbia Police Department. He appears to have lost control of the vehicle as it started to skid.

According to police, the motorcycle started to skid on its side, hit the curb, left the road and eventually ran into a street sign and utility pole near the intersection. Both Small and his motorcycle were pinned against the pole.

Small was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash as a result of serious injuries, according to the release.

He was wearing a helmet when the crash happened, and the release states that alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor. The investigation is ongoing.
