COLUMBIA — A 39-year-old Columbia man died in a car crash early Sunday morning in east Columbia.

Dennis Mctye, was traveling west in the 4700 block of Richland Road and lost control of his vehicle, a 1993 Mercedes 500 SEL. He lost control, drove off the north side of the road and struck a utility pole, according to a Columbia Police Department news release Sunday morning.

The vehicle flipped and came to rest on the side of the road. Mctye was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, according to the release. Police are awaiting toxicology results to see if alcohol or drugs were involved.
