JEFFERSON CITY — Ten high school students from across Missouri competed in the Poetry Out Loud state poetry contest on March 13 in Jefferson City.

Each student, a winner of his or her regional competition in February, recited three poems for a chance to represent Missouri in the national finals April 28-30 in Washington, D.C..

Rock Bridge High School senior Sara Ashbaugh, featured in the video, took second place for her performance of poems by Edward Hirsch, Walt Whitman and Karin Gottshall. In the video, she recites part of Hirsch's "Poor Angels."

Thomas Fields, a senior at St. Louis University High School, won first place.
