COLUMBIA — Meals on Wheels will hold its biggest annual fundraiser next week, delivering boxed lunches ordered in advance.

The nonprofit organization teams up every year with MU’s Hospitality Management program to deliver turkey or vegetarian croissants for $10 each. Orders must be placed by 5 p.m. Friday by phone, email, fax or online.

In 2013, the organization delivered about 2,000 meals in the fundraiser, called Big Wheels, and the number of orders is higher than last year, according to JoNetta Weaver, executive director of Meals on Wheels.

Hospitality students prepare the meals, with half of the fundraiser's proceeds paying their expenses and the rest benefiting Meals on Wheels.

The organization delivers meals to about 100 people every day who aren’t able to prepare food for themselves, such as the elderly, the disabled and those recovering from recent hospitalization. The cost of the meals is based on income, but some people receive food from the organization at no cost.

“Part of our society needs to help each other, and that’s what we do,” Weaver said.
