COLUMBIA — A nearly $1 million gift to the UM System Board of Curators will be used to establish a scholarship endowment for the medical schools at MU and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The gift from the Edward E. Baumhardt Trust, totaling $923, 395, will establish the Edward Baumhardt Scholarship for students enrolled in the MU School of Medicine. One or more scholarships will be given annually.

The gift will also fund an award at MU's and UMKC's schools of medicine. Beginning in 2016, a $2,000 award will be given to the medical student or resident physician who writes the best paper related to schizophrenia, according to a press release.

The award will alternate campuses by year. MU School of Medicine students and residents will be eligible during even years, while UMKC School of Medicine students and residents will be eligible during odd years, according to the release.

Supervising editor is Allie Hinga.
